While most of Hilton Head Island’s plantation communities are gated, this area is free for all to come and go as they please. Dozens of shops, boutiques, and restaurants—not to mention plenty of parking spaces—draw thousands of tourists and locals alike, each year. Not only does Forest Beach have an easy-to-find location (follow the Cross Island Parkway straight down until it ends at the Coligny Beach traffic circle) but many of the island’s amenities are within a stone’s throw. Also, the island's first grocery store and first movie theater were both founded at Coligny Plaza. North Forest Beach includes the area between Coligny Circle and Shipyard Plantation's Crown Plaza Resort while South Forest Beach consists of the land between Coligny and Sea Pines Resort's Ocean Gate. Forest Beach History

When Charles Fraser split from the Hilton Head Company in 1956, the Forest Beach area was divided into two parts: north and south. Fraser got South Forest Beach, beginning near the Sea Pines Ocean Gate, and Fred Hack received the more residential area of North Forest Beach. The Seacrest at Coligny, built by Wilton Graves, was up and running even before Sea Pines Plantation. Fraser opened the William Hilton Inn by 1959, and from then on Forest Beach development boomed. 1963 welcomed the Adventure Inn and a golf course by the same company, Atlantis Development. Commercial and residential development spread like wildfire, and land prices soared between 1966 and 1972 with an increase over 400%! The Holiday Inn, home of the Tiki Hut, arrived in 1972 and the same developers opened condos next door; and the rest is history.

Amenities:

Coligny Plaza : Locals refer to Forest Beach as "downtown Hilton Head" for good reasons. Coligny Plaza and the Beach Market consist of tourist-y gift shops and boutiques as well as unique restaurants and daiquiri bars, and even a police station. Set beside the traffic circle, Coligny Plaza is a collection of fun stores (fudge shops, candle makers, and Rita's Italian Ice, a Hilton Head Island staple) located straight down Pope Avenue from some of the island's best nightlife venues. The nearby Park Plaza and what locals refer to as the "Triangle" collectively contain approximately 10 bars/clubs for either a lively night out or a quiet evening on the town.

Interesting Facts:

North Forest Beach, the residential section, has been nicknamed 'the bird streets' for obvious reasons (each street is named for an avian species). Dove Street, one of these small sandy lanes, is known for its decorations during the Christmas season; and Jacana Street is a gathering place for the island's dedicated surfers because the wave patterns there are the best HHI has to offer at high tide. On a side note, Coligny Beach (where North and South Forest Beaches meet) is known as the best beach for the younger-of-age crowd. Its collection of hotels bordering the oceanfront features the Tiki Hut, located at the Holiday Inn Resort, which is the island's only public beach bar.

Activities:

Tennis:

Near the Forest Beach area are two popular, well-merited tennis facilities: the Van der Meer Tennis Center on DeAllyon Avenue and the Shipyard Racquet Club which also features Dennis Van der Meer. The nearby Players Club Resort, located on DeAllyon Avenue, also features tennis courts.

Golf:

Although the Forest Beach area has no golf courses of its own, Hilton Head Island's many golf amenities are at the most a short drive away. Water Recreation: Because of the close proximity of the Atlantic beach, numerous water sports are also available. Sailing and beach volleyball are only a few of the many options visitors to the area have. Back To Top
